What is the Student Spotlight Program?

At The Variable we believe that if we want to see the world become a better place, then WE need to be the element of change. It has become increasingly challenging for graduating students to connect with designers in our industry and find job opportunities. As a way to help students improve their design skills, practice presenting, and build relationships with working professionals, we’ve created a program that allows students to present a single project over our live broadcast and get feedback from seasoned designers.

How it works-

Students and instructors fill out their respective forms below to nominate a student to make a 5-10 minute presentation of a single design project on our live broadcast.

Mentors that would like to take part, give feedback, and meet upcoming graduates can fill out their respective form below to be added to our invite list. Mentors will simply be added to the event invitation, which they can accept or decline. There is no pressure or obligation to participate when mentors submit their information. Once we have a selection of students ready to present, a broadcast event is scheduled and we’ll invite mentors to participate.

Make a Nomination

Know a talented student that deserves some credit?

Let’s feature them on our Student Spotlight.

Not only does a Student Spotlight give innovative scholars the opportunity to showcase their designs and practice presenting, they will have a chance to interact directly with working professionals and build relationships that can be instrumental in building their post-graduation career.

Instructor Form:

Please note:

Spotlight segments are always preceded with a 1-2 minute introduction that highlights your design program and University. This is your opportunity to brag! It is expected that you/your student nominee will provide (at minimum) a written bio that provides listeners insights into what makes your program great. Where possible, provide other media content (pictures, video clips, audio recordings, etc.) that we can use to promote your program. We expect all submitted copy and content has been approved for publication by your university. By sending an attachment(s) to us via email or otherwise, you affirm that you own or have permission to distribute the contents for public broadcasting.

By submitting your nomination, you’re giving The Variable permission to contact you with updates and follow-up questions regarding your nominee’s spotlight broadcast.

Student Self-Nomination Form:

Please note:

Students who participate are expected to prepare a 5-10 minute slide presentation showcasing their project.

This is not a competition. There are no “judges.” We give talented students exposure to help them build relationships and connect them with relevant industry experts. Where possible, we will invite guests to give their feedback from the companies you listed in the form above, but there are no guarantees.

We STRONGLY encourage students to thoughtfully fill out the post-spotlight prompt document so it can be published in our newsletter.

Mentor Form:

Feedback from professionals like yourself can make all the difference in the career growth of these talented scholars. Submit your info below and we’ll add you to our spotlight event invitations. There’s no obligation by submitting the form below, you’ll just be invited to virtual events that you can accept or decline. Participating studios will have opportunities to be featured in our live broadcasts and in other publications, so it’s a win-win! Who knows, you may meet a future employee :)
